Reading a book called from a liminal place is about Asian Americans living in the US. One excerpt from a book is making me very despair. The author writes," 'Structural assimilation'… means Asian Americans' becoming truly 'one of us' in white American society and having the same privileges and 'life chances' as white people." He further quotes from Asian American sociologist Won Moo Hurh, and this is the line that makes me despair, "Non-White immigrants may attain a high degree of cultural assimilation, but structural assimilation is virtually impossible unless the immutable, independent variable, 'race,' becomes mutable through miscegenation or cognitive mutation of the WASP."

Asian Americans can never be assimilated into US dominant white culture. I'll probably keep thinking about this, but the current feeling is unpleasant.
