The movie if Beale Street could talk taken in New York Harlem in the '70s. A twenty-two years old Fonny, a black young man, is accused of raping Mrs. Rogers. Tish, his fiancé, nine-teen years old attempts to prove his innocence. Trying to retrieve justice but only hits a big wall. Can't they just love? Tish's family agreed to have a baby with Fonny and congratulated her by drinking wine. Tish called Fonny's mother and their family to her house and told Fonny's mother that she is going to have a baby. But Fonny's mother was worried. She cursed Tish when asked who would raise the child and take responsibility. Tish said she was going to have a baby to Fonny’s mom, and she walked out of the house. While she walks out of the house Tish's mother opened the door and said, “she’s going to be your grandson” Fonny's mother kept saying “That child” five times and left Tish's house. Later, this child gives the constant hope of getting out of Fonny from the prison. Fonny is said to have raped a woman in a movie, but he never raped. At the Supermarket, a white man harmed Tish and Fonny pushed the man away in anger. The nearby officer Bell came to mediate the situation and try to take Fonny with him, but the owner of the Supermarket stopped him. She testified that Fonny was just trying to protect his fiancé, Tish. Officer Bell looked into Fonny's face for a while and then left. Later, Fonny was accused of the sexual perpetrator. Officer Bell told Mrs. Rogers to describe the rapist was Fonny. And he goes to jail and Tish's family makes efforts to prove Fonny's innocence. But at the end of the movie, Fonny is still in jail. I expected the movie to cheerfully exonerate Fonny and live a happy life with Tish and his children, but it wasn't. The movie ends with a scene of Tish and their son visiting Fonny in prison. It came as a fresh shock to me. I think the film director wanted to show that injustices as an ongoing issue. This movie won many prizes such as the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture, Independent Spirit Award for Best Director, and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture.
